THE Bachelorette’s hunky magician and nice guy Apollo Jackson — whose real name is Jake Spence — has revealed he renamed himself after his “crappy” car.
The 24-year-old, who put on 40kg to tip the scales at 150kg, at one point was stressed, unhappy and suffered depression before he had a heart attack two years ago at age 22.
He was left in critical care for two weeks, but after reassessing his life he began a new chapter with a new name.
“I went through a bit of a tough stage a few years ago and I was driving a crappy Holden Apollo car,” he told Confidential, “and when I’d been through all this stuff and quit what I was doing to pursue music and magic full-time, that’s what I had all my gear and stuff (in). I used to drive around to all the shows in an old crappy Apollo.
“There were a few times when things got tough and I spent a few nights sleeping in the car. It was a pivotal moment in my life. I didn’t have any money coming in, I was chasing my dream and knew I wouldn’t always be driving this car. But even though this car was crappy, it was what was getting me to my gigs.”
Jackson said he was happy to be recognised as The Bachelorette’s “resident gentleman”.
“There were a lot of times growing up that nice guys finish last and I was always taken advantage of and stepped over, and sometimes companies wouldn’t pay me for six or eight months and get away with it because I was the nice guy. So it’s nice people are recognising me for my manners.”
Jackson, who is 13 years younger than Bachelorette Sophie Monk, said he was never concerned about the massive gap between them.
“I’ve never been one to worry about age, I always thought it was about the connection with the person. It is in the back of my mind, but it wasn’t a concern for me. I’m quite mature for my age and have a lot of life experience. I’ve never dated anyone Sophie’s age before, but it’s all compatibility for me.”
